Ten Directions In Three Times expresses the fundamental logic of mutual identity and mutual penetration underlying the principle of non-obstruction of all phenomena in Hua-yen metaphysics, specifically in regard to the ninth principle of its "Principles of the Ten Mysteries".

It tries to show how past, present, and future periods of time in their various formations comprise nine periods altogether. In turn these periods form one period, amounting to a total of ten periods. Each of the ten periods is thus simultaneously fulfilled in the present moment of a single thought.
